What to Bring to La Tomatina 2026: The Ultimate Checklist

Getting ready for La Tomatina is straightforward, but getting it wrong can ruin your day. Tomatoes, August heat, slippery streets and 20,000 people around you: the right gear makes the difference between an unforgettable day and a frustrating one. Here’s the complete checklist, point by point.

✅ Clothing: the golden rule is «disposable»

Old or white t-shirt
Wear a t-shirt you don’t mind losing forever. Tomato stains don’t come out – not even with industrial washing. Many people choose white because the red tomato effect looks spectacular in photos. If your ticket package includes a La Tomatina t-shirt, that works perfectly.

Old shorts or trousers
Same rule: nothing you care about. Cotton shorts or light trousers are the most comfortable choice. Avoid jeans – when wet they weigh twice as much and restrict movement.

Full change of clothes
Highly recommended. Have a waterproof bag ready with: a clean t-shirt, clean trousers, underwear and dry socks. After the battle you’ll be able to get changed before heading back. Without a change of clothes, the return journey smelling of fermented tomato can be quite unpleasant.

✅ Footwear: closed shoes are the smart choice

Closed-toe trainers with non-slip soles
The streets of Buñol during La Tomatina are covered in a layer of crushed tomato – extremely slippery. The best option is old closed-toe trainers with good grip, ideally ones you can throw away afterwards. Tie them tightly before entering.

What about flip-flops?
Many people arrive in flip-flops or Crocs and have a great time. They’re not prohibited. However, in the crush of the battle feet get stepped on constantly, the streets are slippery and flip-flops are easy to lose. If you decide to wear them, it’s your choice – just be aware of the risks.

✅ Eye protection

Swimming or diving goggles
Tomato juice in your eyes stings more than you’d expect. Swimming goggles are the most recommended accessory by La Tomatina veterans. You can add them directly when buying your ticket – a convenient way to arrive in Buñol with everything ready from the start.

✅ Phone protection

Waterproof case with neck cord
If you decide to bring your phone into the battle, a certified waterproof case with a neck cord is the safest option. Keep it tucked under your t-shirt during the fight.

You can also add the waterproof case directly when buying your ticket – along with the goggles, it’s one of the most useful add-ons of the day.

The most stress-free option is to leave your phone in the locker and enjoy the event without worries.

✅ Documentation

Copy of ID or passport
Security staff may ask for identification at the entrance. You don’t need to carry the original: a photocopy, a photo on your phone or a screenshot saved offline are all valid. Avoid carrying original documents that could get soaked.

La Tomatina ticket saved on your phone
Your PDF voucher must be shown at the entrance to receive your official wristband. Save it on your phone before leaving – the signal in Buñol on the day of the event can be patchy and you might not be able to open your email when you need to. Download it in advance and have it ready on screen.

✅ Hygiene and personal care

Travel-size shampoo and soap (optional)
The Buñol Town Hall sets up public showers after the battle. If you prefer to use your own products, you can bring a small bottle of shampoo and soap – there are no restrictions on this.

Small towel
To dry off after the shower before getting changed. A small microfibre towel is ideal – light and quick-drying.

Sunscreen SPF 50+
La Tomatina takes place at the end of August, in the height of the Spanish summer. The hours of waiting before the battle and the heat during are enough for a serious sunburn. Apply sunscreen before leaving home.

✅ Hydration and snacks

Water bottle
Full bottles are not allowed in the battle area. Drink plenty before the battle.

Light snack
If you’re travelling from far away (Madrid, Barcelona) you’ll set off during the night and arrive in Buñol 3–4 hours before the battle. Bring a snack bar or something light for the waiting time.
